Odyssey Express Client Journey: Matt

The Onset

Matt was a hard worker and proud of his career. When his employer sold the business to a big organization with higher expectations, he began feeling overwhelmed. Soon after, a loved one became ill and needed his help. The combined stress became unmanageable.

Matt developed sleep issues, headaches, irritability, and racing thoughts. His doctor prescribed medication and suggested time off work. After six months, despite feeling less irritable due to the medication, Matt felt stuck and defeated. He shared this with his insurer, who referred him to the Odyssey Express program.

Treatment

In treatment with his Odyssey Health clinician, a behavioral therapist (BT), Matt was helped to envision what a meaningful life would look like for him, highlighting family, career and exercise. Together they assessed his functioning and created a return to function plan.

Matt learned tools for reaching values-based goals, including mindfulness, planning, sleep hygiene and proper pacing. They created a customized physical activity plan, and his BT walked with him – literally and figuratively – every step of the way.

Progress

Matt was now exercising regularly, and enjoying family and social activities, and feeling re-connected to the things he valued. He also concluded that he wanted to work somewhere else. He and his BT identified suitable opportunities, did job prep activities, and worked to ensure that his functioning could meet a full-time job’s requirements.

Matt’s track record and newly-acquired tools helped him land a job that started shortly. To ease his nervousness, his BT provided support and a maintenance plan, helping Matt return to full-time work that aligned with his values and restored his pride.
